In contrast to past advice to cancer patients to rest and avoid activity, the message now is to avoid inactivity. An expert panel convened by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has concluded that exercise training is safe during and after cancer treatments and can improve physical functioning, quality of life, and cancer-related fatigue. Exercise also helps patients keep off excess weight which research shows can cut down the chance of recurrence. The ACSM guidelines urge cancer patients to be as physically active as possible both during and after treatment.
The most crucial factor to consider when incorporating exercise into your recovery plan is working with a health professional who understands all the variables that come into play with a cancer diagnosis and it’s treatment. Strength for Life’s Certified Cancer Exercise Specialists are fully aware of the special considerations each client may require and will design an individual exercise prescription based on their needs. Our mission is to empower, inspire and strengthen by using exercise as a method of healing.
