In contrast to past advice to cancer patients to rest and avoid activity, the message now is to avoid inactivity. An expert panel convened by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has concluded that exercise training is safe during and after cancer treatments and can improve physical functioning, quality of life, and cancer-related fatigue. Exercise also helps patients keep off excess weight which research shows can cut down the chance of recurrence. The ACSM guidelines urge cancer patients to be as physically active as possible both during and after treatment.
The most crucial factor to consider when incorporating exercise into your recovery plan is working with a health professional who understands all the variables that come into play with a cancer diagnosis and it’s treatment. Strength for Life’s Certified Cancer Exercise Specialists are fully aware of the special considerations each client may require and will design an individual exercise prescription based on their needs. Our mission is to empower, inspire and strengthen by using exercise as a method of healing.
Strength for Life provides FREE exercise equipment (yoga mat, resistance band, stability ball) for each client to keep and holds FREE weekly group exercise classes for cancer patients and survivors. Each session is for 8 weeks in length with a short recess in between sessions. Prior to starting an exercise class each participant must provide a doctor note and register here. Our classes are held at the locations and times below, please indicate which location you are interested in when registering for a class.
